When anyone from MetaGeek travels we try to get a good Wi-Spy recording from the airport. Yesterday I was sitting in the San Jose Airport waiting for a flight back to Boise and decided to plug in my Wi-Spy to see what was happening. Wow! Talk about a noisy microwave! I tracked the microwave down to a bagel shop between gates C10 and C8 in Terminal C (I was waiting at C10).… Read More

When there is a suspicious device showing up in your 2.4ghz spectrum, you can bet there is another Wi-Spy user who can help you identify what it may be. The community on the forums here at MetaGeek.net is great, simply click the send recording button in your Chanalyzer software!

As MetaGeek LLC’s newest intern, I will be writing about some useful tips and tricks to do with your Wi-Spy or Wi-Spy 2.4x.

Today I’ll be addressing the timeframe. By default Chanalyzer 2.1 will show only the past 2 minutes, but it is capable of showing the past hour! (Chanalyzer 3.0 will show the entire accumulated length).

Click the position indicator and drag it to the left or right to adjust the length of time you would like to be displayed:

Toggling between different lengths of recordings can aid you in your understanding of shapes of wi-fi activity.… Read More

During the Thanksgiving holiday I like to ponder the things I’m thankful for. The past year at MetaGeek has been busy and exciting as we have Wi-Spy 2.4x and Chanalyzer 2.0 (and 2.1). We’re very grateful for everyone in the community who has encouraged us, offered feedback, suggestions, or even just clicked the “Send Error Report” after a Chanalyzer crash!
Getting a startup off the ground is hard work (as many of you know from firsthand experience), but every time I read an email about how a customer used Wi-Spy to solve a bizarre interference issue I know that all the hard work is worth it.… Read More

Glenn Fleishman over at WiFi Networking News served-up a great review of Wi-Spy 2.4x this last week. And after drawing a solid picture of why spectrum analyzers are important, and what Wi-Spy and Chanalyzer do, Glenn does what we wish all reviewers did: he gets his hands dirty:

"I honestly found it tricky to figure out how to test the Wi-Spy models since I had no particular issues facing my rather ugly RF environment at the office, but one fortunately dropped into my lap [so] I fired up the Wi-Spy 2.4x to see what was the matter."

I just finished speaking at the the 2007 Antenna Systems and Short Range Wireless Conference on "Optimal Wi-Fi Channel Selection." As I wandered the exhibit hall this morning I was a little worried that all the exhibitors were so specialized: antenna measurement, antenna manufacturers, RF simulation, etc.

Everything seemed so high-end that I didn’t think anyone would be interested in Wi-Spy.… Read More

Today Cisco announced that they will acquire Cognio in the first quarter of their fiscal year 2008. Cognio and Cisco have been working together for quite a while to provide spectral analysis tools to Cisco’s enterprise customers. Cisco’s announcement today reinforces the importance of spectrum analysis tools to help troubleshoot and manage wireless networks.

MetaGeek and Cognio have always been friendly competitors; in fact Cognio was our first customer I’d like to publicly congratulate them on the acquisition and wish them the best of luck in the enterprise market.… Read More

We’ve added channel reports to provide more information about Wi-Fi and Zigbee channels. A channel "grade" is also given, which is an indicator of how quiet the channel is. The channel with the highest grade should be the best channel to install a new network on (given a long enough data sample).

Fixes and Updates:

Scroll spectral view with the mouse wheel
Relative fast forward and rewind (speed based on timeframe)
Added Channel Reports (Wi-Fi and Zigbee)
Fixed startup race condition that occasionally caused crash

Grab it from our downloads page.… Read More
