Installation Issue - Found New Hardware Fails
Submitted by RickG03 on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 12:20.
I just received a Wi-Spy 2.4.x and am having difficultly getting it
installed. The Chanalyzer software installed without a hitch. However,
the Wi-Spy 2.4.x USB device cannot install. When I connect it to a USB
port, it opens the Found New Hardware wizard. When I try to point it to
a driver file, it can't find any on the CD or in the Chanalyzer install
folder. How can this USB device be installed? It ends by saying the
hardware cannot be installed and nothing appears on the Chanalyzer
screen.
I am using Windows XP on a laptop.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the follow-up, Rick. Odd behavior, IMHO, because
Windows\INF ought to be somewhere that Windows ALWAYS looks for
drivers. Glad you are up and running...enjoy!
Brian at Metageek was able to offer some suggestions that resolved the
issue. For some reason, Windows didn't know where to look for the HID
drivers to get the WiSpy hardware working. This was causing the Add New
Hardware wizard to fail and the device wouldn't work.
The
solution was to simply point the Add New Hardware wizard to the
WINDOWS/INF folder when prompted for the driver. After doing this, the
wizard completed successfully and the hardware started working
immediately.
Thanks Brian!
Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having. The Wi-Spy 2.4x (as
well as the original) is a USB HID device. HID support is built into
all modern operating systems, including Windows since 98SE. If your
device isn't being recognized, there are two possibilities:
1) A problem in Windows is preventing it from working. Unlikely, I'd say,
particularly if you have a USB mouse or keyboard that IS working
correctly.
2) The Wi-Spy device is having a problem that is
preventing it from working. If that is the case, the best bet would
just be to get you a replacement sent out.
Please contact me via
email so I can work through some additional troubleshooting steps and
get you a replacement unit if necessary.
