Since WiSpy2.4x is receive only, has anyone tried using it with a frequency converter?
In amateur radio I know that there are microwave band frequency converters. Rather than redeveloping the wispy for each band, just have a converter from target frequency (either down or up) to 2.4Ghz and have the software display the new frequency range is applied over the existing ISM band. Just treat the 2.4x as a sampling device.
The advantage for MetaGeek would be that the converters would be an upgrade to an existing wispy2.4. It would let MetaGeek concentrate research monies on improving the sampling aspects of the next WiSpy version and allow those who want a particular band to pickup the module for each. Then as you upgrade the 2.4x the converters would still work giving a good upgrade path
I think that you would loose someplace around 3-5db with this route, but but that could be recovered though a higher gain antenna for whatever frequency. They could probably be powered by a 9v or lithium cell if there was a power requirement.
Any thoughts?
Here at MetaGeek, we haven't seen or heard of anyone attempting to convert the frequency, but we would love to hear if someone has successfully done it. Wi-Spy 5x is on schedule for release this year! Stay tuned!
