    Default Wi-Spy DBx and Spectool_gtk

    I got it to run fine using the apt-get install method, but it will not allow me to select a device. There is no WiSpy devices to select and when adding a device, none are detected.

    When I run scantool_gtk from commandlinke, I see the following messages are generated:

    (spectool_gtk:6335): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'

    I do manage to see a stream of info when I run scantool_raw, so I assume it's working.

    I am able to boot into WinXP and it runs fine in Channelizer, so I know the USB and WiSpy are working.

    Any ideas?

    Default Additional Info

    I am running a Ubuntu 9.04 distro called LinuxMint 7. I am using Wi-Spy DBx.

    Although I see a wispy device in the udev rules area, it seems to be for wispy 1. Is that correct?

    $cat /lib/udev/rules.d/99-wispy.rules

    # Two vid/pid pairs for Wispy1 USB dongle
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="1781", ATTRS{idProduct}=="083e", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0bad", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="1781", ATTRS{idProduct}=="083f", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"

    Dmesg output:

    Default WiSpy DBx and spectools via apt-get

    It seems that after looking at it a while, I realized that the version available using Apt-get (which is version Spectools-2007-10-R2) does not support WiSpy DBx.

    I downloaded the latest version from http://kismetwireless.net/spectools/ (version Spectools-2009-06-R1) and compiled.

    It seems to run, but the spectool_gtk still will not recognize it as a device.
    I run spectool_net, then fire up spectool_gtk and add a network device (attaching to 127.0.0.1). It identifies it is Wi-Spy DBx, but all the graphs say "device calibrating", and (because I ran the gui from the command line) I see all kinds of errors flying by in the terminal:

    ** (spectool_gtk:10224): CRITICAL **: wispy_planar_button_press: assertion `wwidget->sweepcache != NULL' failed
    ** (spectool_gtk:10224): CRITICAL **: wispy_channel_button_press: assertion `wwidget->chanopts->chanset != NULL' failed

    Along with the original post's errors:

    debug - channel new 0x8450010 widget 0x8450010
    debug - channel 0x8450010
    debug - planar 0x8452008

    (spectool_gtk:10224): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'
    debug - topo 0x8466010

    (spectool_gtk:10224): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'
    debug - spect 0x8450298

    (spectool_gtk:10224): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'

    Also, here's the output from the command line that fires off the spectools_net:

    $sudo spectool_net -a 127.0.0.1
    Found 1 wispy devices...
    Initializing WiSPY device Wi-Spy DBx USB 0 id 5
    USB error: could not detach kernel driver from interface 0: No data available
    TCP server listening on 127.0.0.1 port 30569

    WTH?? I feel like I am sooooooo close

    Default spectools-2009-06-R1 and LinuxMint 7 (Ubuntu 9.04) solved

    It seems that I did not have the dev packages for gtk2 installed. It was preventing the spectools_gtk from compiling. I installed all the gtk dev stuff I could find in Synaptic and I was off to the races.

    I hope this helps anyone in the same boat.
