Default GPS for $50 - is it good?

Was thinking about buying the GPS that they sell on the site.

    Has anyone tried it?

Been trying craigslist with no luck so far.

Mainly I want to map free wifi hotspot signals such as starbucks and mcdonalds for future reference.

Also, is wirelessmon the program that has the color coded octogon shaped signal patterns?

Also also: how is the interface with google earth and inssider?

Any info on these things would be great, thanks.

    Default MetaGeek's USB GPS

If you don't have a GPS already, and you're looking to do some war driving, this GPS device is pretty good.

Here is a map I created of the free Wi-Fi hotspots in Boise using the USB GPS and inSSIDer KML export utility. This google map uses the same kml file that goes into Google Earth. It looks much prettier in google earth. Free Wi-Fi in Boise

For a free and open source solution, this is pretty cool. It doesn't triangulate the location of the AP; it puts them on the location where it saw the strongest signal. It also lacks the ability to interpolate the data.

I've also included a QR code for the WiFi Mapper Android App. It will do what you're looking for. So if you have the barcode scanner app, take a picture of the screen and it will download it for you.

Do they have software that triangulates the signal?

The Android program triangulates the location of the AP, but it doesn't map out the signal strength map. If you want something like that VisiWave is an awesome tool. You can check out the 30-day trial on the website.

I think signal strength mapping > triangulating the AP (signal strength is basically pin-pointing the AP, or at least the strongest signal)

So I'm more interested in something like wirelessmon...
